You can't expect a bunch of elite African American football players to want to go to Ole Miss when you have a plantation owner as your mascot.
Regardless of the historical significance, blah blah blah, it's come to represent something that people assume to be racist, and unfortunately, the legions of people who have never been plantation owners in the state of Mississippi take it as their own heritage.
ETA: I feel I have the right to say this because my family has a plantation in Mississippi.
I think it's sort of a wannabe mascot, tbh.

There's actually a petition that was started by OM alumni in the mid 2000's that, the last time I saw, had almost 80,000 signatures. I'll see if I can find it.
What I would like to see is the petition to remove Colonel Reb....

i was in a bar watching the Carolina/Arky game (or blowout, whatever you want to call it) and sat next to the SP coach...tried to get the game turned every 5 minutes. other than that, pretty cool guy
