50 most painful losses in college football history

#1
Texas 15 - Arkansas 14
Dec. 6, 1969: It was all there for No. 2 Arkansas: a season-ending home game against archrival, No. 1 Texas, a national TV audience and President Nixon in the stands. The Hogs led, 14-8, in the fourth quarter. They pinned the Longhorns on 4th-and-3 on the Texas 43. But Texas -- Wishbone Texas -- threw deep. James Street fired a perfect strike to tight end Randy Peschel for 51 yards to the Arkansas 13. Two plays later, the Horns scored to win, 15-14. Hogs coach/icon Frank Broyles, 85, hasn't seen the replay yet.

(Billy Graham gave the pregame prayer and George Bush, the daddy, was in attendance as well)

#29
Arkansas 31 - Texas A&M 6
Dec. 6, 1975: With Darrell Royal's power waning at Texas, the Aggies had their shot at Southwest Conference glory in the mid-70s after 15 losing seasons in a 16-year stretch from 1958-73. They were 10-0 and ranked No. 2 coming off a rousing victory over Texas, needing to beat Arkansas for their first perfect regular season since 1939. Instead, the Razorbacks smashed A&M. Not only did the Aggies lose national title aspirations; they lost an outright league championship and attendant trip to the Cotton Bowl.

Arkansas's lost to Tennessee in 1998, I would consider a hard pill to swallow.

Nov. 22, 2003: In 2003, the No. 15 Rebels had second-generation hero Eli Manning at quarterback and All-American kicker Jonathan Nichols, who had missed one field goal all season. A defeat of No. 3 LSU in Oxford would send the Rebels to their first SEC championship game. Nichols missed two field goals. Manning -- facing fourth-and-10 with 1:55 to play -- took the snap, took two steps back and fell down, tripped by his own lineman. LSU won 17-14. Ole Miss still hasn't been to the SEC title game.

Dec. 8, 2001: One week earlier, playing a game postponed because of the Sept. 11 attacks, Tennessee upset Florida to win the SEC East and climb to No. 2 in the polls. A victory over the Tigers would allow Tennessee to play for its second crystal football in four seasons. The Vols counted those chickens but they never hatched. LSU dominated the game and initiated a change of the SEC guard. Phillip Fulmer coached the Vols for seven more seasons but never took them to such heights again.

Oct. 31, 1959: A game defined by Billy Cannon. No. 1 LSU trailed No. 3 Ole Miss 3-0 in the fourth quarter -- and even that small deficit seemed insurmountable against a defense that allowed just three TDs all season. But Cannon fielded a punt at the LSU 11-yard line and eluded six Ole Miss tacklers on the way to the end zone. The Rebs got revenge in a 21-0 Sugar Bowl win two months later, but the damage was done. ESPN's Ed Hinton once opined that this loss changed the course of his state's history for the worse.

I personally like this comment I just saw towards the bottom.

quote:

#1 has to be the BCS National Championship 2007 UF-41 OSU-14. Ohio State had reached new heights as a football team, and were arguably the most dominate team of the decade, had even managed to score a perfect .100 in the BCS standings, and got absolutely enhilated by a much inferior team in the 1-loss Florida Gators. A wound that even 4 years later is still sore, not to mention the fact that that started the rise of the SEC dominance that has left the Big Ten in the dust for the last few years. And even now, the SEC trolls on Big Ten blogs never let us forget. I was eleven years old when it happened, I cried myself to sleep that night. THAT was the worst loss ever.

Agreed. If Cal-Stanford is in the top 20, that play should be included.

After 40 years, it still ranks as one of the best games ever.

The 05 LSU lose to Tennessee also had to be tough considering the timing and the way they lost.
