Paying players to play college football?

There has been some talk lately about paying college football players to play football. On espn one of the commentators suggested giving each player a debit car with $5000 a year to spend. This leads to a multitude of questions. Is this right, is is not enough to get a free ride during college? What about those colleges with smaller budgets, some programs cannot afford to pay their football players money. Is it fair that just because you go to a big college you get money while other players from smaller schools dont get money but work just as hard? What about the other sports? Is it fair that only football, baseball, and basketball players get paid while other athletes from less popular sports do not?
What do you think?

I think they should get a little extra money. But I don't really agree with some that say they should get $50,000 or $100,000. They are already getting a free education and experience/training/exposure for a sport that could potentially earn them millions in the future

If you pay football players, you will have to pay every other sport also. That would really kill off a lot of schools Athletic Departments.

They already get paid. They get free tuition, food, living quarters.

I agree with most of what you said. I think if you open up that issue, then it will get out of hand quickly. I believe it should be enough that they are getting a free college education and actually free clothes and gear from the team. If you want to pay them then you only pay them for practice times and you only pay that ordinary college students earn from working for the college.

Title IX would never allow just football players to get paid unless the law was changed. Fact.

Title IX screws the whole thing up. You will have to pay girl tennis player the same amount as the football player. It would bankrupt most schools.
Of course you could pay the players $500 per month and then charge them tuition and room and board.

For some unknown reason, I was listening to Colin Cowherd today and he actually brought up some really good points on why paying college football players would be a bad thing for college sports. First, the value of a free college education can never be undervalued. It takes years for most of us to pay off our student loans and for most college athletes, it's something they'll never have to worry about. Also, college football is the only sport that generates a significant amount of revenue for the school. They basically fund the non-revenue sports by themselves. If schools started paying CFB players, more sports would be cut and fewer athletes will be afforded the opportunity to get a free education. I thought it was interesting points Cowherd made and I agree with most of them.
