Dye and Tubbs also had the advantage of coaching in a time when the NCAA was working to make things much more evenhanded across the CFB landscape. Jordan did what he did in an era of teams (notably Bama with Coach Bryant) being able to sign 100+ kids to scholarships just to keep the from playing for other teams.

FWIW, Jordan was at Auburn for nearly a decade, before Bryant came back to Tuscaloosa in 1958. What Bryant did with scholarships wasn't something that couldn't be done anywhere else.

I totally understand, and agree with you on both points. I was just tryign to say that while his overall record may be modest, you can't look at it and say Shug shouldn't be at the top (or in the top 2) greatest coaches AU ever had. Mainly because you can't judge his W/L % using today's climate as a gauge. It was a whole different era back then and methods for keeping teams from becoming successful were, while perfectly legal, weren't exactly "fair".

I know that Bama/Bear weren't the only ones to pull the scholarship trick, they just perfected the art form.
