compared to Saban? I know he's no longer involved (or atleast I imagine), but I just wondered if UA fans are as proud of him as you are of Saban.
by the way, he always seemed like a good guy.

The difference is this. I love Nick Saban as a football coach. He gets me what I want, W's.

I respect Gene Stallings because I think he was/is a decent human being, and a pretty good football coach to boot.

They look at pictures of Stallings with reverence.

They look at pictures of Saban to climax.

He was also Coach Bryant's protege, one of the final connections back to the man himself and bleeds crimson and white. If Saban retired today, most people would affiliate him with LSU rather than Alabama.

I respect both of them for what they have done for the University. It seems that Saban gets more love because of the situation he came into and turned our program around so quickly.

Also, Coach Stallings is one of the main reasons Saban decided to come here.

How many children were named Gene after he won the National Championship?

losing to an assbag like curly will tarnish some love for you as a coach

Not even close. They loved him in 92 but every other year they were bitching about his offense. Stallings also won his MNC in his 3rd year and he had to wait until they forced him out to build his statue. Don't get me wrong they liked Stallings for the most part but I've never seen anything like the Jonestownesque following that Saban has there.

in a way... this is pretty close to dead on for now. with Stallings, i really felt like the Bear was alive and well at our university because he was a lot like what i imagine the bear was like. so yeah reverence. and SINCE stallings, we've been miserable... so climax works for Saban because he's the present and future for us.

I don't think we had ANY of the statues while Stallings was coaching. The walk of champions and the statues came at the end of Shula's tenure.

I didn't know that, I guess I thought it'd been around since just after Bryant.

If I were a Bama fan I would like Stallings better. He at least has a real connection to the University. Saban is just a mercenary who has shown he has no qualms about stabbing a school in the back.

I blame Stallings (and Barker) for Alabama fans liking McElroy so much. If this was any other fanbase, they would have been much harder on him.

I joined this board in November because I was fed up with Alabama fans on this board praising McElroy for his pathetic play.

Oh come on... he's not Tebow or VY but he's been good... and very few fan bases will rock the boat when their team is winning

He did coach under Bryant at Alabama for a couple of years in the late 50s and early 60s but played under Bryant at A&M. Not sure how that connection trumps Saban's connection by just a whole bunch. But, I do like Stallings......

in the history context of the word romantic... i think bama fans DO have a more romantic view of Stallings and the 92' championship... and even a VS Saban sort of thing. but, is everyone that doesn't have a "Bama connection" gonna be considered a mercenary if they're a good coach?

i mean, at some point you inevitably run out of Bama connection coaching choices.

*edit*

no matter how much of a connection to Bama anyone has for a pedigree, WINNING is more important than any of the other shite.
