Apparently Georgia RB Ealey (Spikes intended gouging victim), doesn't think that what Brandon Spikes did was a "suspendable offense". What a weird twist to this story...

I imagine that the rationalization is that this type of thing, i.e. "eye-gouging", happens often-enough that it's considered one of the expected (and therefore accepted) dirty tricks of the game.
For instance, when there is a scramble and pile-up to recover a fumble, you often hear the announcers talk about all the shenanigans, like punching and eye-gouging, going on under the pile to recover the ball.

People are running around like Spikes tried to kill the kid and it was the most god awful thing ever done by an athlete. "It was premeditated"

No, attempting to gouge another's eyes out is normally only looked at as a handshake, or a pat on the back.

This includes the whole interview, not just parts like the AP report.
"That didn’t really matter to me,” Ealey said. “That’s their decision. I think he shouldn’t have gotten suspended at all. We were just out there playing football.”
The SEC accepted Florida’s discipline of Spikes for his action after a play in Florida’s 41-17 victory. The incident has received national attention and much criticism.
Ealey said Spikes didn’t get to his eyes.
“I had my eyes closed,” Ealey said. “He really didn’t gouge my eyes. …I was just trying to get up as fast as I can.”
Ealey even posted an update on his Facebook page to let friends know that he was fine.
“I just said that my eyes were OK,” He said .”It was 20-20. He didn’t really get my hands close to my eyes.”
The game had its share of personal fouls and chippy moments between the teams.
On Georgia's second drive, Spikes used his helmet to hit Ealey on the helmet after
a Georgia penalty. Ealey pushed Spikes back and poked his hand under the chin strap of Joe Haden
CBS cameras also caught Nick Williams blasting Tebow late long after he handed the ball off on a running play.
“It was just a lot of emotion in the game,” Ealey said. “We were out there fighting. It was a big rivalry game. Everybody was talking trash back and forth.”

The "full interview" doesn't explain much. Ealey's response is sort of like "no harm, no foul". I imagine if Spikes had gotten to his eyes, he might be singing a different tune.

The reason it's so publicized is because it's Spikes. The unknown LB at Auburn wouldn't have got nearly as much pub.

Look, if it's your team, most people look the other way when it comes to situations like this. That's reality.
However, I think if one honestly assesses what Spikes' intent was and imagines it was his kid that Spikes was trying to gouge, then maybe he'd have a different perspective and, forgive the pun, not be blinded by loyalty to one's team.
