There are lots of Internet message board rumors going around that Southern Mississippi and Mississippi State are in negoations to schedule a series between the two schools in football. The two haven't played since 1990. It seems that Coaches Dan Mullen and Larry Fedora are both for this game to happen.

Just curiious what the rant thinks about this matchup and if these two schools should play. I know LSU plays other in state D-1 schools. Ole Miss has refused to ever play Southern Miss in football.

Personally I think its a great Idea and hope it becomes reality.

Not trying to hate on MSU, but it's probably a good thing for MSU and the SEC that they haven't played USM since 1990. I think USM would have won more than half of them.

I read in an interview last year in the Daily Journal that Byrne hasn't warmed up to the idea of playing them. Both MSU and Ole Miss in the past have said they will turn down a bowl that is against USM>

I live down in the Hattiesburg area, and tonight at the Oak Grove/Petal game I had 4 people mention it to me that they have heard State and USM are working out a 4 year deal to play 2 in Starkville and 2 in Hattiesburg.

Well I can see how playing the mustand buzzards has advantages. Cheap travel cost and high ticket sales, but losing wouldn't be so great. Same reason you don't see Bama playing Troy.

I think its a great move in my opinion if it turns out to be true. I mean South Alabama, USM, now all we need is Tulane and Ill be cover on short drives to watch my bulldogs play.

Bad idea for MSU.....what will MSU gain out of it. The SEC is tough enough....why would you want to play another team that really hates you...If MSU loses then it really helps USM in recruiting........If MSU wins...big deal you are suppose to win since you are a SEC school.......

I think it is great..

if MSU is willing to play away games against La Tech and Middle Tennessee State...then they should be willing to at LEAST play USM (even if it is a home game for MSU)...

Geaux Eagles!

to some degree...the same can be said for LSU...they play all the D-1 schools within the state of Louisiana...

Yup... yall don't want to play to USM.

Don't validate the Mustard Buzzards. It's a lose/lose situation for MSU.

Half-truth. We refuse to play in hattiesburg and they refuse to play in Oxford.

I would be ok with a 2-1 deal though......but that is still stretching it for me.

The same reason Memphis stopped playing us in Basketball.
Nothing to gain. Everything to lose.

You don't want a rivalry with a non-BCS opponent. It just isn't good for the program.

Translated to say that OM is scared they'll continue to get their asses handed to them like USM did 4 of the last 5 times they played.

USM is in the same conference as Memphis. That's never stopped OM from playing Memphis.

Quit making excuses and admit that OM is basically being a bitch because they're scared they'll lose and it will hurt recruiting.

We don't recruit the same players that Memphis does.
Southern can steal our players.
