2025 population for all 16 SEC cities. Number in parentheses denotes where each city ranks within their respective state:

It would be interesting if you did this by metro areas...
The first two would be at the top... but probably Norman would be third. with Knoxville, Columbia South Carolina right behind, and Fayetteville would zoom up the list joining Lexington.
And if Tuscaloosa were included in Birmingham's metro... it would be probably #4... but I don't think it is.

The GTR area around State is roughly 130K and steadily growing. The key word is steady. Explosive growth like some of the college cities have seen is actually not a good thing because it takes government time to catch up with infrastructure i. e. roads, utilities, water, sewer etc.
All that to say these areas will continue to grow going forward.

Austin (Austin / Round Rock / San Marcos MSA) ~2.5 million
Nashville (Nashville / Davidson / Murfreesboro / Franklin) ~2.2 million
Lexington / Fayette MSA ~520K
Not sure about the rest, but gives a better feel on population

No, it's not. It's about a 45-minute drive or so, depending on which sides of town.
The Birmingham Metropolitan Statistical Area is about 1.2m.
The Tuscaloosa MSA is about 281k.
According to this, maybe 1m or so within an hour drive?
There are generally fewer people outside of the city proper because there is a huge national forest to the south (green area above), and a vast metallurgical coal basin used for steel production to the north (light green below).
