We havent really had a guy that could go up in coverage and make an elite play over a DB since Amari Cooper.

He did it in the A day game and now Ryan said they call him the Gulf of Mexico.

This is what DeBoer needs in his offense.

I think people might be sleeping a bit on Derek Meadows, LSU wanted him pretty bad and he has elite size too.

Looking at the UW offense I think this staff prefers guys with size over pure speed guys like we saw during the Tua/Bryce/Mac era here so they’ve been playing the hand they were dealt with some shorter receivers but I don’t think it’s an accident that Meadows, Morgan and potentially Sales all have big time size.

Yea its clear they want to push the ball vertically.

They did it at UW and they wanna do it here.

Keelon is more of a DeBoer QB than Ty was. Ty is great at intermediate and shorter passes.

This is the one area that I think I still want to see more from Keelon relative to Mack because AM looks like he has a massive, elite level deep ball even if he lacks the short to intermediate release and accuracy I’ve seen so far from KR.

If KR has an elite deep touch I don’t see how he doesn’t win the starting job and unlock elements of the offense we haven’t even seen attempted yet.

Part of me believes Mack is going to start simply because I dont see him returning again if not.

Keelon must have committed to staying, but Idk its been hard to read DeBoer at times.

Russell is the guy. Whoever loses the QB competition will leave after this year. It’ll be Mack. I appreciate him coming to Alabama and he’s solid but Russell is better.

I agree that Keelon has undeniable talent and should be the guy.

Things get froggy though, because then you have to ask why did Mack return? Did the staff really believe there was a winnable opportunity for him?

Sometimes as fans we wish they'd just do the obvious thing, but maybe the do believe Mack can push the ball down the field better.

Russell is the starter. No elite QB prospect is signing up to ride the pine for 2 years anymore. If they aren’t starting by their sophomore year, they’re gone in the next portal window. They’ve got it lined up where they can expect two from Russell, Haven sit one, then two from Haven. That’s what’s going to happen.

That would be ideal.

Maybe Mack was paid a fair amount to be the backup incase of injury. Then at least you have a reliable backup.

Everytime I’ve seen Mack I’ve felt like he was capable of being an NFL 1st rd pick but that at the same time he still needed time to develop if he was going to run the offensive effectively.

Not much touch on the short throws and inaccurate at times on easy looks, but then he’d mix in an absolute dime that only a handful of college QBs could connect on and you’d be reminded of why he could end up an NFL starter if the light came on.

But with Keelon every time I’ve seen him his release was so explosive and he almost had an improvisational feel to his game like a Johnny Manziel that you just see him and think “that kid is a potential superstar”.

Ty was here healthy for such a short window I almost can’t count him and Mac didn’t have the same natural gifts but ran the offense as effectively as anyone we’ve ever had.

They asked Mack to return because

1) What if Russell failed to progress in Spring? (Not a problem)
2) What if Russell gets hurt? (With this OL, who can be confident he plays a full season?)

If they let Mack walk, they were essentially pinning the backup plan on good but not elite true freshman QB.

People need to stop worrying about this QB battle. Keelon is the man unless he gets injured in the summer conditioning or camp.

This is what common sense is telling me too.

I find myself more in the camp of coaches just announcing the starter and making it clear.

You cant tell me in the locker room they dont know whos better.
