BAMA has had tryouts for walk-on's all the way back to Ray Perkins in the early 80's. They did it the entire time Saban was here as well.

I don't think that was ever really true across the board...Not every team had "try outs" routinely.
And with the "preferred walk on" rules and restrictions... we didn't hear much about regular walk ons... because it literally meant you had to walk on to a program unannounced. And coaches didn't really want random guys just showing up at practice.
With the new 105 roster limit... it looks like walk on tryouts are coming back. .But that is interesting because it means that programs don't want to actually fund 105 guys.

We always had them. We still do the all walk on kick off, and they aren’t preferred guys.
Usually there is some week in the spring posted on campus that try outs are held.
Kickoff added. Elko did it this year too I believe in one game, just not posted on YouTube.
