The point is, since you missed it, is that no true championship competition should have to include non-deserving teams, for whatever reason. The UFL or CFL champion does not belong in the NFL playoffs simply because they are a professional football league. Maybe someone else can explain it to you like a five year old, as they say.

In fairness, are you saying you think Tulane and James Madison deserve to be in the playoffs?

Many would also argue that Clemson, SMU, Arizona State and Boise did not belong last year. It's not because they are smaller schools. It's because they are not as good. Now, if they beat Oregon and/or Ole Miss you might have a point.

I can't wrap my head around why people want to include teams who cannot compete in the playoffs.

If you are talking about FCS, here is their playoff criteria:

So, instead of picking 12 teams out of the 136 FBS teams (as FBS does), FCS takes 24 out of 129 FCS teams.

There are 11 automatic bids for conference champions. So, if FBS were to do this, your automatic bids would have been (9 conference champions):

Indiana (Big-10), Georgia (SEC), Texas Tech (Big-12), Duke (ACC), Kennesaw State (CUSA), James Madison (Sun Belt), Tulane (American Athletic), Boise State (Mountain West), Washington State (Pac-12).

That would leave 15 at-large bids, which would be decided based on:

So, the FCS is actually much more wide open than the FBS process for letting smaller schools have higher seeds. What we have isn't great...but this would be crazy.

The current D-II has a 32-team field on a "super regional" basis, with four SRs.

If a conference has six or more teams and plays the required number of D-II games, the conference champ is guaranteed a spot in the playoffs. The regional rankings are determined via a formula that takes strength of schedule into account.

The four SR champions make the semi-finals.

Most D-II teams play a 10-game regular season, but some work in an 11th game.

Prior to this year, the field was 28 teams with the #1 team in each SR getting a bye.

Prior to that, it was a 24 team field. Before that it was a 16 team field.

When you keep arguing over who missed the playoffs, they get expanded, but then the same arguments take place.

Y'all want to scream "DEI football", prior to this season, D-II had a rule called "earned access" that was really a mess.

The G5 is involved in the playoff for one reason and one reason alone. Anti trust lawsuits.

The p4 needs to just subsidize their own playoff. It’ll likely make money and actually be entertaining and give them a chance at a trophy they can actually win.
