The CFP is not a prize

Being named National Champion is the prize. The CPF is a tool intended to settle who the undisputed best team and national champion is. Inviting a team just as a reward for being pretty good or as an acknowledgment of their history in the sport is doing it wrong.
Think about how we got to this point. I remember one year where LSU won the NC. USC was bent out of shape because they weren't picked to be in the game. USC claimed they would have won and created their own championship trophy for themselves. (stupid I know)
There was another year when UCF did something similar.
The playoff system is intended to eliminate that kind of BS. Schools that think they have something to prove can get to do so. For this reason, lesser schools (Tulane, James Madison, etc.) that have a good year and don't usually play the big names need to be in there. There is no reason for Oklahoma or Alabama to get invited. No one believes either of those teams is the best team in college football, do they? It would prove nothing we don't already know for them to be in the CFP. It's a waste of time.

The Playoffs are a contract incentive though.

Thank you, Captain Obvious.
However, you left out the part about being invited to the CFP is a step towards that National Championship and as for your assertions about Oklahoma and Alabama, we'll see.

ESPN was showing a montage of coaches lobbying to get in. Even Duke’s coach is lobbying to get in the CFP. It seems like they really want it

It serves as a dash of hope for fans for a few weeks to boost seratonin, like buying a lottery ticket. People still buy them even though the odds are bad.
Plus it’s a recruiting tool.

Just because LSU and bama can’t make the playoff anymore doesn’t mean it’s not the correct format for CFB. There should be no G5 teams allowed in if they are ranked outside the top 10 though.

It also represents the opportunity to perhaps host an additional on-campus game and draw additional TV revenue.
With ESPN as sole media rights holder, it's surprising few are speculating the committee's selection for teams that bring higher viewership ratings.

Yes you are stupid. They didn’t create the ap vote it existed and awarded them. More than usc fans cried fowl everyone except you apparently thinks ou earned. Ou got beat 35-7 by ksu in the big 12 title game. They got in bc pac 10 didn’t have a title game. Basically your argument is usc fans are stupid for thinking ou should be penalized for losing the conference championship game but now everyone else is stupid for thinking bama shouldn’t be penalized for losing the conference championship. Make it make sense
