Danny Wuerffel and Ali Peek discussed the recent coaching search

I'm sure it's a huge PR stunt, but whatever.


the bullet points were pulled from 247, but i've listened to about 10-15 minutes of it already and it seems to be spot on:


- We reached out to Lincoln Riley numerous times and he wasn't interested . Danny clearly would have wanted Riley but he was just not interested.

- Lane got everything he wanted but he for whatever reason just stopped communicating with us. Danny met face to face with Lane never got an anti SS vibe. Lane is very interesting communication style Danny said

- Sumrall was clear #2 of who was available to get. Marcus freeman Cignetti and Lane were tier 1 and only Lane was achievable.

- Danny is not going to lie . He thinks SS did a great job on this search. Thinks we could not have gotten Lane we just missed.

- You could hear the passion in Danny's voice about sumrall. Said he watched Lanes press conference and felt more confident in getting Sumrall

- GM hire . Danny was involved in that too. Used search firm for this hire as well. Interviewed 5 GM candidates. Howie Roseman Philly GM and UF grad was profuse in his Dave Caldwell praise. Caldwell had already reviewed our roster pre interview and had lots of great insight during interview. GM will be supporting the head coach. All 5 candidates were "overqualified " in Danny's words. Sumrall loves him and they will work together both in evals of talent and valuation of what players are worth. Trying to be on leading edge

- OC hire. Danny says that was his biggest question with Sumrall was offense . Danny was uncomfortable with the amount of one score games and he wants offense as much as anyone. Sumrall brought up UF brand first said we need to be playing 10 and 11 personnel mostly. Occasional 12 he said but with our WR mostly 10 and 11. Sumrall said UF needs better coordinators then he has at Tulane. Sumrall mentioned OC names and Danny liked them. My apologies They did NOT discuss any specific names for OC on the podcast

- They joked about GNFP presenting the data that it is another Billy. Wuerrfel said Jon made him want to play again. Also said sumrall is smart and wants feedback and is willing to change based on feedback from his players and coaches . Extremely self aware so opposite of Napier.

- Danny says he's authentic genuine and will work the team hard be fair but tough.

- They worked well with turnkey and turnkey did not "fire" UF

- Sumrall has an authentic fire and passion for UF that many who have been at UF longer don't have

- Final interview they brought in Dave Caldwell as well. Caldwell also gave a big thumbs up for Sumrall.

- Booster alignment. No boosters were involved in the search. Danny said SS had no issue or pushback going to get Lane. Danny spoke to big boosters yesterday and many felt like we did after both PCs that we may have dodged a bullet. He said Lane and LSU may end badly lol but he wishes nothing bad on anyone.

- Danny thinks Sumrall agreed that a Dan Campbell comparison is valid that sumrall is tough but also he believes Sumrall values a quality OC. Sumrall said a good OC comes here and the OC will get all the credit since he's a defensive coach. Which makes sense and very self aware.
