Nah, Kiffin got the LSU offer and then basically told Sumrall "this is the job for you".
One of the first things Sumrall said was that Lane signed off on his hiring

Even worse is that Florida wanted Kiffin so bad, Sumrall felt forced to tell them he was Lane approved. Dumpster program

LSU fans will tell you that LSU is the lone almighty school in the SEC and whatever they want, they get. It doesn't matter if the Lord Jesus Christ himself offered Lane a free ticket to heaven on November 30, 2025, LSU would talk him into coaching the Tigers next season.

Sumrall made that comment in jest. He knew he wasn't Florida's first choice. Probably wasn't even 2nd or 3rd. You taking it literal is hilarious.

It’s pretty well known that Kiffin was turned off by Florida’s AD. He didn’t want a football GM in his hair and didn’t trust UF’s AD to keep out of the program. LSU’s AD, on the other hand, was clear from Day One: name what you want, and it’s yours.
Florida also blinked and was interviewing other candidates. LSU said: nope, it’s you, only you, and has always been you. We’ll wait.

No. Georgia, Texas, and Bama could have pulled off something similar.
But taking Ole Miss's 11-1 coach was a dunk on them and on Florida who wanted him badly.
