Texas and Texas A&M fans - historically was the game on Thanksgiving?

I miss remembering? I thought pre egg bowl replacing it on Thanksgiving - Texas vs Aggies was actually on the day?

It was played on Thanksgiving Day (Thursday) from 1915 to 1999, with the only exceptions being 1943 & 1944, when the game was canceled.
From 2000 onward it shifted to the Friday after Thanksgiving, apart from 2000–2004 and 2006–2009 when the game remained on TDay.
The final game before the series hiatus (2011) was played Thanksgiving night.
I definitely prefer Thanksgiving evening.

NFL encroachment more than likely ended NCAA turkey day games. :(

When I was in school, it was that Friday and I loved it.
Could have that “thanksgiving lunch” at home with family, take a nap, then head to college station (or Austin) and proceed to get smashed for the next 24 hours with all your friends.

Yeah, the Thanksgiving game was a great tradition. But given the circumstances, I’ll take a night game on T+1 instead of an 11 am game on Thanksgiving.
Maybe the annual A&M/LSU game can return to the first game of the season like it did during the 80s. That was cool. Can set up a different theme for that.

NFL killed it. Having it on Thanksgiving night as the only game on was amazing and that's how it was when I was in school. You would have the Lions game then the Cowboys and then A&M and Texas. Once the NFL started scheduling TDay night games it lost a lot of that luster. Now I would rather it be Friday or Saturday.

Opening weekend has tradition between the two schools, but personally I'd rather have the LSU/A&M game be on the last weekend of October (Halloween)

It was an awesome tradition and the reason Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. My family is full of Longhorns and Aggies and we would have a huge Thanksgiving spread and all watch together. Huge reason why I just dont have the enmity for A&M that I do for OU. Losing that game for so long was sad for me, I'm just happy to have it back but it isn't quite as special being the next day.

'96 when A&M entered the big12 is when the game moved to Friday. There were even a couple outliers in the late 80s early 90s where the game was played more than a week off of thanksgiving

I totally get why people who didn’t grow up with their team involved in a Thanksgiving day football game tradition wouldn’t be down with such a game being forced on ‘em on a major holiday. But for me, Thanksgiving Day IS Aggie Football; I never knew anything different.
Sidenote … I’d love to see the A&M/LSU game start a new tradition that falls on a recurring day in early fall.
