in the midst of all the coaching madness - assistants

Texas A&M has been the poster child for bad contracts and how to incorrectly operate a football head coaching hire/extension. So, in addition to implementing incentive-based contracts, it’s exceptionally refreshing to see that we’ve learned some other [expensive] lessons along the way.
Getting lost in all the head coach discussion is where the assistants fit in. Hiring the priciest guy in the room might be an adrenaline rush, but schools also have to spend the money to buy out (and re-hire) an entire staff of guys who are willing to walk through fire for their boss.
Looks like Mike Elko recognizes and appreciates that. It’s a crucial piece.

Drink did that on his last extension. It's a smart play.

It’s invaluable. Your guys have to know they’re your priority.

I don’t know
Yes we gave fisher too much
But we did give him a blank check basically on assistants, and he went out and got them. Sometimes what looks like a winner isn’t though.

watching the neftlix doc earlier this year about the SEC, i actually liked all the coaches featured. it was cool to get to see behind the curtain and what we don't get to see daily and how they operate/coach on a day to day basis.
the scene where a&m was prepping for UT i believe and Elko blew the whistle to get the 1st team D off and the 2nd team D on, and they all loafed. he blew the whistle again to stop them, put them all back in place and try again....and they still loafed, so he did it again. idk, maybe its my marine corps boot camp flashbacks, but I came away liking him more than i anticipated. that was good shite showing these kids making major loot, I'm still in control.

Even for all the credit Saban gets, it's honestly more astonishing when you consider how many assistant coaches he lost on a regular basis.
Towards the end there it felt like a totally different staff nearly every season.
Consistency is huge, especially if they bring in and maintain significant concepts/systems.
