Am I the only one that is getting 2020 coaching search vibes? I know we are just getting started but most people think Auburn has Sumrall at the top of their list and I think he would be great. But Sumrall is probably going to play the long game and see what happens at LSU and Florida and possibly Ol Miss before he makes a move. With that being said during the 2020 search Auburn was turned down by some mid level coaches and seemed to get desperate at the end. Kevin Steele’s name was floated around and Harsin was hired basically because “anyone but Steele”

I know it’s early, really early but I feel like if we get turned down a few times it will be 2020 coaching search all over again especially with other lucrative jobs available. The kind of coaching search where we get turned down a few times and they start floating Jimbo Fishers name around everyone loses their minds and then is happy when Auburn makes a desperation “as long as it’s not Jimbo” hire

I dont care who they hire as long as they can coach. No harsins, weekend golfers, etc. I like the enthusiasm Durkin has with his players. You can see it week end and week out they play their tails off for him. If we could get an offense coach with the same drive and a freakin offensive line coach Auburn may be a pretty good team. Freeze never seemed to take any blame. I dont doubt the guys liked him but he just didn't seem like he had much drive this year.

it cannot be overstated how different CFB is than it was in November 2020

no NIL, extremely limited portal, essentially unchanged since the first major realignment in 1992

there are major conferences that were prominent five years ago that either are almost completely unrecognizable (Big12) or no longer exist (PAC12)

the 12-team CFP was still a distant dream, in fact the 4-game playoff produced so many blowouts that many were complaining the field was watered down enough already, and expanding it would just make it worse

the kind of guys we should be looking at are completely different from what we were looking for in 2020

I hope we take a look at a couple nfl guys. Idk who they would be but the games getting closer and closer to the pro game every day and it takes a much different strategy to get a dude making millions to listen to you when youre crawling his arse bc he fricked up than it does to get a student athlete trying to get to the nfl to get those same millions.

I think this is a piece of the why dabo sucks now pie.

New environments require new strategies.

Haskins couldn't coach or recruit. Freeze COULDN'T coach. We need a guy who can do both

I feel a little different this go around as Cohen has been here vice just getting here and having to turn around and hire a coach.

Freeze was playing golf on the regular multiple times a week even before games.

Harsin well no recruiting will do it to you.

I don't believe all of the turning us down stuff. I think that some folks wanted Kiffin when that fell through they went to Freeze. We heard names but a lot of that is agents throwing that out there. Like hearing from some Jimbo, Franklin & Gus are candidates. If this doesn't work out then Cohen will be the next on the chopping block.
