Their long history of losing hurts them. But if they win next week they will take a huge leap.

Vandy has been impressive so far, but their wins haven’t been against stellar teams. They can’t help that Va Tech sucks or that Cocky is underachieving. If they win in Tuscaloosa, they’ll be top 10 and they’ll have earned it.
ETA. I will say that they have a better resume than Penn State, who perennially gets to lose their 2 big games every year and somehow stay top 10.

I don’t understand a lot of these rankings. I’m really starting to wonder if a lot of these voters are not just slapping something down and then mailing it in. I hope the playoff committee does a way better job here in a few weeks than the AP and coaches have.

The committee has promised to take SOS into greater account this year. They need to because it is possible to build a resume by playing mostly weak teams in and out of conference. Having an undefeated record may not mean as much as having one or two losses in a much stronger conference. And I'm still of the opinion that the Group of Five needs to stage its own playoff, rather than take a spot from the Power 4. There are plenty of bowls available to stage it.
