Is Harold Perkins playing out of position again?

“We want to get him running,” LSU coach Brian Kelly told The Advocate. “We want to get him in his best element, which is being an athlete. We think that position does it for him.”
Why is Kelly so committed to ruining Perkins? A hybrid LB/DB? He should be playing the hybrid roll of OLB/DE like he did as a freshman, similar to how Von Miller played in the league. Should have got his weight up to 235ish, so he can line up at the edge at times to speed rush the QB, his specialty.

He's not big enough to play defensive end in the NFL. This is a way to utilize his speed and let him blitz off the edge. Hopefully it works.

I feel like they are asking him to play away from the line of scrimmage. He’s listed as an ILB, and I don’t know much about the Star position at LSU. I’m assuming its a safety/linebacker hybrid role.

Harold Perkins is 6'1 220 lb, runs a 4.4 40, and was the best coverage LB in the country when healthy.
His natural position is a nickel/LB/box safety hybrid that can come off the edge occasionally.

Star is a floater position enables coaches to put him anywhere they like.
You’re acting like Perkins is not a tweener. He’s built like a tall DB. He never faces a blocker that doesn’t out-weigh him significantly. It’s not that easy to scheme around.
One thing we know for sure is leaving him to cover the middle of the field was a terrible idea. Our best defender was ruined by just standing there hoping something came his way. Star position has him attacking the passer.

Then yea, he's going to get torched in pass coverage.
Said it when he came out- Perkins best position was running back and I think if he'd stuck with that he would be one of the best in the country right now.

He was LSU's best rated player in pass coverage in 2023 per PFF, IIRC

It stopped working because teams just started running right at him, he was too small to set the edge and became a liability in run defense.
You should remember, A&M did it a ton.
