From the article:
Don’t get your hopes up for the Southeastern Conference to officially move to a nine-game football schedule any time soon. At least not until we see the College Football Playoff potentially expand, again.
“Let’s talk about the College Football Playoff. I think the 12-team launch was incredibly successful. More people had opportunities. We had a lot of conversation around who was left out, and we kind of forget, well, those teams were going to be in bowl games. Maybe New Year’s Six bowl games, or the Citrus Bowl in Orlando. This year it was, should they be in, should they be out? What’s important to me is how teams are being evaluated,” Sankey said, according to On3. “A team that’s playing two-thirds of their games against teams with winning records, compared to a team that’s played a very small number of their games against winning records in a different setting.”
Sankey added, “That raises the issue of how spots are allocated. Let’s think about last year. There are allocations. Clemson was not in the Top 12, they were allocated a spot by virtue of being a champion. Boise State is not in the top four, they’re allocated top four, that moves somebody out. Arizona State’s not in the top four, they’re moved in. Part of the pre-conversation has been, as the conference has changed, let’s take a look. Well, now we have an example. That provokes the conversation around straight-seeding.”

9 games will always favor the most talented teams. Expanded playoffs will always favor the most talented teams.
Just as it did during the BCS and 4 team playoff.

Aren’t they expanding in 2026 to, at least, 14?

Sankey sucks and the 12 team playoff is garbage.

Yup. But you know what will make it better? A 16-team playoff!

This is Sankey's way of saying "We want more money from ESPN" without saying it's all about the money.

Sankey is an idiot. He’s a terrible commissioner

That's just great...the sport that already has issues with too many games being played, and with smaller rosters, etc. will now have more games against difficult teams and more games overall for the top teams.
Will it take two teams playing 3rd string QBs in the championship game to make the decision-makers realize that more isn't always better? No, because that would require them to check their greed.

Most talented/deepest teams. This is a lot of wear and tear on bodies or just chances for injuries. I enjoyed last season and the playoffs. But I’m not sure we need another round in there for guys to get hurt.

I would argue that we either get the guaranteed spots or go 9 games in conference and 3 games against B1G teams with the top 8 teams from the SEC and B1G doing an NFL type Super Bowl. I am not keen on us being the keeper of the entire college football world's survival. They will survive. Just not on our level. We flush money their way for what.....to keep them afloat or on par with us? No thanks.

That’s the thing about capitalism, man. The consumers have to be educated and active enough to punish the producers for their greed.
If we all would seriously take a stand and not watch for a few years, they would listen to us. But instead, we bitch on a message board and still hope and pray our favorite team beats our least favorite teams on fall Saturdays.

too many games being played
FCS has been playing a 24 team playoff for over 10 years and it works just fine. High school teams play 16 games if they go all the way and it's not a problem. NFL teams play more games.
