Bobby Burton -

The portal opened just one week ago today. Texas has added four players in just seven days (five in nine days). All are key additional pieces and all are at positions of need.

You get the feeling that maybe, just maybe, there was a plan. A plan that was thought about and strategized behind the scenes for months. Hats off to Brandon Harris and the entire personnel department staff. What they accomplished in such a short period of time is the envy of college football personnel departments.

**

Not a single portal visitor who visited Texas this portal period took a visit elsewhere following their Texas visit.

Texas closed on the players it wanted. There was no back and forth. That is such a rare thing in these days. In sum, it shows the Horns had done their due diligence, identified the right players, and then had the capacity and capability to strike while the iron as hot.

**

The latest pledge, Maraad Watson of Syracuse, is indicative of a portal recruitment process that will pay dividends this fall.

Watson, a freshman All-American defensive tackle, played the third most snaps of any freshman defensive tackle in the country in 2024. The Irvington, N.J., native originally picked Syracuse over Tennessee. Yet when it came time to enter the portal - with suitors like Miami and Ohio State lining up - Watson’s first and only visit was to Texas. Texas had clearly worked the back channels of portal recruiting better than anyone.

**

As I’ve written for more than a week now, Texas will continue to be proactively aggressive if opportunities present themselves.

While i'm sure we are paying quite a bit, i highly doubt Texas is paying more for their current roster than tOSU paid for theirs last season.

When you look at the transfers, most of them are DT's. That was our weakest position and all will have a very good shot at playing time. We added a WR (another immediate path to starting) and a TE ( we had 0 in game experience at TE).

So while money was obviously a factor, playing time is just as important. If it was solely money, we wouldn't have gotten money whipped by Tech for Anthony Holmes.

You are paying more than anyone for transfers. OSU paid a large sum of money to retain players. They’ve had good players for a long time, Texas hasn’t. Sark replacing the shitty players.

DT is OSU's weakest position for 2025. One transferred into Texas in the earlier window. Now 2-3 more have transferred in without visiting the defending national champ.

You think it's just because they want to live in Austin?

Are you asking me if a recruit would rather live in Austin over Columbus? I'm sure 9/10 would.

Much like Ohio State, DT was by far Texas' weakest position going into 2026. That has been solved. I just think your claim "Texas is paying more than anybody" is pretty funny. If that was the case, Texas would have gotten all of their transfer targets (that didn't happen).

Maybe Ohio State is paying below market for DT's. Maybe they staff feels more confident in their current roster than you obviously are.

Word is they are paying more than twice what anybody else is. The window is closing on Manning and the natives are restless.

Some nice players but they don't blow my doors off.

They are filling specific needs (DL, TE, WR), including providing depth.

Sark recruited Mosley (WR) in HS. He will follow AD Mitchell and Matthew Golden's path to the NFL.
