What is "big" about Tennessee? The fact it borders 7 states?
Is it a replacement word for something else?

Dude...surely you've heard the fact that Bristol, TN is closer to Canada than it is Memphis...right? But I guess it makes it "wide" instead of "big". If you go by Square Miles, the only SEC states smaller than Tennessee are: Kentucky and South Carolina.
