Someone floated the idea last night of doing away with conferences...

so, my question for everyone: If every team went independent, who would be the teams you'd play every year?
For UGA I think it would be:
Florida
Auburn
Georgia Tech
SC
Clemson
I'm a little on the fence with SC and Clemson. I'm not sure if we'd play both every year, or play at least one of them every year and both sometimes. They'd be very regular opponents though.

Conferences are bargaining unions. They are still necessary unless your Notre Dame.

Domers will never join a conference until it negatively affects them in some way. As long as they can put together a decent (not great) schedule every year and still get in the playoffs without having to play a CCG, negotiate their own tv deals etc..why join a conference?
It will take either all the networks lowballing them on tv deals and/or committee punishing them for not playing a CCG to make them even think of joining the B1G or ACC. Until then, it won't happen.

At some point, the government will need to step in and force some type of merger with the top 20 programs and the NFL. This isn't amateur sports. As much as I love Auburn, realistically it is just a subset of professional football. I am not smart enough to provide a solution, but smart enough to see the ridiculous nature of the current situation.

Also, the government wrecks and ruins everything they touch. Remember the Biden admin spending billions to install NINE (9) EV charging stations, some of which aren't even working? Now imagine that sort of ineptitude applied to CFB. The Supreme Court has had their say, no further government meddling needed.

Well, setting back and doing nothing is what has us here. When a 17 year old sues the NFL so he can skip college and enter the draft, CFB will go away. We need to be proactive

If auburn couldn't force Bama to play them every year to give them relevance, their program would have no point of existence.

I have no clue how the fits into this conversation. Auburn has very weathly alumni. This current environment will allow us the thrive. Programs like Alabama are in trouble.

WAS.
College football WAS the superior product.
Unrestricted transfers, no measures against roster tampering, unlimited payscale...........most football programs will check out of this system as soon as any alternative presents itself that will prevent their roster from being raided by bigger dogs every offseason.
And I'd be shocked if an alternative system didn't rip away G5 and the bottom quarter of the power 5 within the next few years. They're going to return to some sort of amateurization, and the rest of us will be watching a frankenstein shitshow.

Protip: They have to actually donate and spend the money.

I think GA would trade Clemson for FSU.
