I don't even know whether an SMU win would put Alabama in the playoffs or not, but watching Clemson lose always makes me smile.

No, committee put Miami at 12 to hedge. If Clemson wins, SMU is in but Miami is out and ACC has 2 teams. If SMU wins, Miami stays in and ACC has 2 teams still.

You’re right. Miami is was given 12 for ceremonial purposes.
