I have been studying this and contemplating this for years and am about 95 percent certain that it is most common in the south. HOO-ing after a big hit is also commonplace in SEC football games as well, at least in the Deep South.

You’re confused. This not unique to the South, or to the SEC. Football … nevermind ..
Go to YouTube, put “espn jacked up” in the search bar, and you’ll see plenty of people from across the US, who are not “the South” or SEC, just lovin big hits in football.
