Realistically, is there anything that can be done to make Vanderbilt competitive?

I originally thought no, but if Lance Leipold could turn KU around, the right coach might be able to do the same with Vanderbilt. Of course, I understand that there is a MASSIVE difference between winning in the Big 12 and in the SEC (looking at you, Texas), but I think with enough time and patience, it's possible. What would that path look like? Troll if you must, but I'd really appreciate some real answers.

If they ever have a good enough coach, he’s probably going to get poached. Same will probably happen with Lance Leipold if a big job becomes available.

They could be competitive if they wanted to be. They have money to invest in NIL, but they have no interest in doing that. They're content to leech off the rest of the conference and cash their check at the end of the year.

I bet Nick Saban or Urban Meyer could have won big

This is the reason. Vandy doesn’t have fans they have Alumni
My brother is a vandy grad and couldn’t name a single vandy athlete nor has he gone to a game since he graduated

That's likely not going to ever happen, because Vanderbilt won't lower its standards like other SEC schools. Stanford is the strictest in this regard, but they have a national brand. Vandy doesn't.
And as another poster stated, the alumni base doesn't care. They prefer to maintain the prestige of a Vanderbilt degree, and you can't do that if you take kids that can barely write and do 6th grade math.

If we all become 4-4 in conference games, then yes. That won't happen so for every team that wins 8,7 or 6 conference games there has to be an opposite record for some other teams. It's actually how it works.

They need to strike gold with a qb. It happens every 15-20 years or so.

One day we are going to get a rich Rodney Dangerfield type of alumnus.
And when we do, he's gonna buy us a football team and give free admission to anybody that will wear a VU tee-shirt (which will be handed out at every home game).
And when that happens you all are gonna be so screwed,

They're here to raise the Graduation rate of the conference. I thank them for their contribution.

How would an A&M fan know, y'all haven't won shite in either conference this century?

They can be good in everything but football
nice play to visit, good school and the big dog football teams need schools to beat. Thus, they might be the perfect member

Yes. They could hire a quality, top 20 coach and try to keep him from using Vanderbilt as a stepping stone job.
Franklin took Vandy to a bowl game all three seasons when he was there and back to back 9 win seasons.
Vandy won’t ever be competing for a national championship every year. But they could be a dangerous program capable of beating anyone on a given day with the right coach and sufficient monetary support from the administration and fans/alumnus.

As has been posted, Franklin made Vandy competitive, so it can be done. The biggest problem would be keeping a winning coach there when the offers to move on inevitably come in. At any rate, Vandy is a founding member and has won in other sports over the years.

How about having Texas A&M lose to Vanderbilt in football?

They're run by a bunch of elitist liberals who hate sports. It'll never happen.

I appreciate the largely non-trolling responses, guys.
