With the season creeping closer by the day, wanted to see if we could spur a little football talk. Full confession, I saw a similar thread on the texags football board a few days ago and just wanted to see what a few others over here might say.

What is your ranking and why for our most recent HCs? Do you just look purely at record, or consider circumstances (in the program and around the conference at the time)? Mainly limiting to SEC, Big 12, and late SWC coaches as that’s what people will be more familiar with. And please, no ranking of Elko, I already see people saying he’s gonna be a top 2 coach for us and the guy hasn’t even coached a game.

I’ve got from best to worst:

Slocum - winningest record. Won a conference championship title game. Biggest knock is bad bowl record.

Sherrill - built the program back up after some mediocre years, ncaa infractions obviously his undoing. Feel like if he had more time he might have been better than Slocum.

Sumlin - never had a disastrous season, but after losing much of the talent Sherman brought after his first two seasons, never could get out of the 8 win rut.

Fisher - about as mediocre as Sumlin, but with way more resources, assistant salaries, upgrades, etc. so did less with more than Sumlin.

Sherman - great evaluator of talent, lots of people seem to want to give him more credit because of this and being left a bad roster to work with, but the reality to me is he was a bad game day coach (second half of game collapses in particular).

Franchione - never finished a season ranked, 0-77 loss, what more needs to be said?

If I was an old rich Aggie booster, I would spend money to bring Sherman back as an OL evaluator/something bc he had a eye for talent, and talented at their development. He has old roots here so it’s not too crazy once college football turns semi pro.

It’s crazy that Fisher ended like he did after all the money and resources he was given

I firmly believe that Sumlin was a better coach than Fisher was for us.

Agree with this. It was discussed on this board back in 2015/2016. Sherman lacked a secondary. Dude had an eye for talent on offense and defensive line. That 2012 team was loaded with his people and his secondary. Back in 2012 SEC was a ground and pound, power running league with just a few exceptions.

La Tech was a B12 passing team and they lit our arse up like the B12 in 2011. JFF just lit them up a bit more. Sumlin reaped the financial rewards of Sherman's talent. The farther removed from Sherman... the shittier Sumlin became.

Sherman rode with Trent Hunter as his main safety directing the defense. When Hunter benched like 9 reps on the combine, I wasn’t even surprised. If our main safety wasn’t in shape, no telling how the rest of the secondary was.
