Thoughts on the 1992 SEC expansion

Why did the SEC bring in bottom feeders in 1992? Not only bottom feeders, but bottom feeders that didn’t even add very many TV viewers. No one cared/cares about Upig football and only a handful more than that care about USCe. 
And then compare it to the next two expansions where the SEC brought in substantial TV markets with A&M and Mizzou and now Texas and Oklahoma.
Were the original expansion teams brought in as whipping boys?
It certainly seems that way.

I’m still a little shocked Arkansas left at the time with their rivalries in that conference

Old school Southern Flagship Universities that have added mulitiple National Championships to the conference since joining.

We weren’t too scared to join. Went to the SECCG 3 times and won a natty in basketball plus over more sec and natties in track than anyone. Beat your arse in football until Saban arrived. Your other sports are weak except recently in basketball which will change when your coach leaves.

Getting out of from under Texas politics in the SWC was worth going to the SEC.

When SMU got the death penalty, it was the end of the SWC. Arkansas always looked to get out of there, after that. SEC made tbe right decision bringing them in. Nobody heard of South Carolina before George Rogers won the heisman.

What a loser. All the gumps kicking and screaming aint gonna stop their inevitable return to the 90s. Is Phyllis still alive? The melt will be fun to watch. Their money tree is drying up. Now that its legal to buy players they dont have the ability to compete. Their cheater advantages are gone. Now when they say everyone is doing it will have a ring of truth to it unlike before when everyone rolled their eyes. Saban was a fraude propped up by cheating alum

Arkansas and SCAR were obvious additions with the objective of adding 2 programs from the closest states in the footprint not already represented in SEC

The SEC was a toilet conference up until the late 2000s.
SEC hill people conveniently forget this, or started watching collegiate football in 2010.

TV mattered back then but not like now. Cable tv was just beginning. Arkansas was considered a top 20 program back then and the #2 or 3 SWC school. South Carolina wasn’t historically great but it was the flagship campus of a moderately sized, fast growing population right in the middle of the SEC footprint. And it has always had loyal, passionate fans. The main reason for expansion was the NCAA requirement to have 12 teams to play a conference title game. Texas, aTm, UNC, and FSU were not available.
