Not just any terrier, a furious Boston Terrier!
The reason it’s a Boston Terrier is because early in the school’s history a Boston terrier ran out onto the baseball field and stole the ball and wouldn’t give it back.
It’s a nice private school with pretty good athletic history. Until recently was always at the top of Southern Conference football and had a recent run of March Madness appearances.

Sports don't give a frick about enrollment. These types of threads generally end poorly, not all, but it seems like most do.
