Has the Ole Ball Coach been a let down at SC? Every year around here SC fans keep saying "It's gonna be a break out year" Yet they continue to be a mediocre team. I'm starting to think the game has passed up SS.

He's still golden, maybe players confidence in him has waned, and he doesn't have the talent he had at Florida. Also, his offense has been copied and studied. Teams know how to defend against the fun and gun (or cock n fire), so until they get the talent to out-execute other teams they'll still be mediocre.

Spurrier is still good. His team is in the best shape they've ever been in. But at the end of the day, they're still South Carolina...

As one who did the sports section for the Illustrated History of USC (Grad school assistanship) I can say there is no legacy of outstanding football at Carolina, ever

South Carolina--where national championship coaches go to win an ACC title, or perhaps just a bowl game over Ohio State or Houston.

Spurrier is just 1 really good QB away from having a really good team at SC.

I hate to admit this, but I agree with you.

So is every other team in the SEC.

No, bc some teams don't have a defense.

Ole Miss went 10-3 in 2003 without a defense. When your defense doesn't have to play because your offense is out there shredding the other team, then your defense plays better. Arkansas will probably win 8 games next year without a defense.

Yeah, like when Kentucky and Couch dominated the SEC in the late 90's, or when Ole Miss dominated the conference from 2000 to 2003.

You guys must truley understand the mediocrity that is our past. He hasnt put up any 10+ win seasons since he has been here but to maintain a non-losing record is something almost unheard of. This 4 years of a non-losing record hasnt been done since I believe the '40s.

He is something like 28-21 so far.. more wins the 1st 4 years than any other SC coach. He is also the only coach to take us into a bowl the 1st 3/4 years. Not to mention unlike any other coach and though still a losing record we have beaten all 3 "Big 3" SEC East teams since has been here.

We have had a football program for over 100 years.. and I believe we sit on an exact .500 overrall record. For people to think we might start lighting the world on fire just because Spurrier arrived would be a foolish way of thinking. BUT the consistent 7 win season is a lot more to build on than any other coach has had.

'Bama
Ole Miss
MSU
UT
Vandy
UK
Arky
Auburn

That is a list of all the SEC teams that have had at least one losing record since Spurrier has been here.. SC is not one of them.. and to not see SC on such a list is not something that would have ever happend in our SEC past pre-Spurrier.

If all those teams have been down at some point or another while Stevo has been @USC, shouldn't he have won a bit more? He should have been able to capitalize on this to the tune of more than 7-8 wins, imo. If you guys are happy with him, that's all that matters.
