So what are the 17 games in the NFL regular season? Or the 82 in the NBA? Or the 162 in the MLB

why are you bringing up professional sports that play a much longer season when I'm talking about college sports that play 12?

Why does FBS football have to be the only sport to not have a real playoff system?

NFL does it 53.

They also have the scout team pool they can draw from all season. They have some serious talent in those pools and each team can fish out of other teams scout pool. That's instant talent whenever they want it. Plus they can trade or buy players until the trade deadline.

Then maybe we should consider going back to a 10 game regular season, then. But 70 players is still a sizable pool of players.

Most of the last 15 to 20 players on good college teams will never see the field. Those are the guys jumping into the transfer portal every year. Because they have to.

Well that’s sort of my point. Cut the number down and those guys out of there. Build up the guys you have and manage the roster.

Is a 4 or 6 team playoff not "real"? How is it fake?

Because it was decided by biased, opinionated voters. Not results.

You can cut that number of players by any count you choose. Some of the best players are going to the highest bidder and it's a can of worms you will never close. Look around, all hell has broken loose. The last thing you can do is even know your roster until after the second portal window. And that has a one-season expiration date. Excluding graduate transfers.

Reducing the roster number would 100% take at least some control over the transfer portal as there wouldn’t be as many spots open every year. Players would have to be more cautious about leaving.

There is no doubt it's devalued the regular season. A 2 loss SEC team is almost guaranteed a spot...in the past you'd need chaos to get in with 2 losses. So big games are still big...just not as important unless you've dropped a couple early already.

I have said this same thing, but the more I think about it, the 12 team playoff may add value to the regular season.

Think about this scenario:

2 loss Ole Miss vs 5 loss MSU in the Egg Bowl. The Egg Bowl is always great, but no one outside the southeast is watching and in previous years they would only be playing for state pride and perhaps a slightly better bowl slot. Now Ole Miss is playing for a playoff spot and MSU is playing spoiler. Value added.

Rivalry weekend is going to be great. Before, you had maybe 6 teams with a legit chance to make the playoffs, with a couple of those spots pretty much decided and a couple of others who just needed to beat inferior opponents. Now you are opening that up to most of the top 20, and let's face it...#10 or 12 is much more likely to lose toward the end than #2 or 4.

I give it 2 seasons and coaches will be calling for 16 teams. Hell might as well make it 64 like NCAA MBB.

Since we have a playoff I like the idea, 8 was also fine. Tbh I think it's good to try a few different sizes out. There is no point in sticking to something just because that is how it was created. We most likely wont go back down from here though because money.
