They declined to "bid" once the player came back asking for more.
That pretty much backs up his statement.
They were originally interested in the player, it became clear that he wanted an obscene amount of money, they backed out and said they weren't interested in players who are just looking for "a big bag."
Texas also backed out for the same reason at the same time, according to their insiders.
Explaining the process of getting outbid does not change the fact you got outbid.
I use to go to car auctions all the time with my dad back in the day. He would bid on cars to the amount he thought they were worth and then he would stop. If someone OUTBID his offer, then whatever bring on the next car. He was looking for a good bargain, not that cherry 1969 Camaro at the Barrett-Jackson auction.
But he didn't go home and then pretend like he didn't bid on the cars that someone else paid more for, or act like the process was beneath him or that he was looking for anything other than a bargain.

"I mean, we were second in recruiting last year," Saban told the audience. "A&M was first. A&M bought every player on their team -- made a deal for name, image, likeness. We didn't buy one player, all right? But I don't know if we're gonna be able to sustain that in the future because more and more people are doing it. It's tough."
Was this bullshite when Saban said it?

I don't think anyone ever said LSU didn't get outbid, you seem hung up on that for some reason.
No one is saying LSU wasn't interested in the player or that they weren't willing to pay him either.
Kelly is just saying he isn't interested in paying a ridiculous amount or getting in bidding wars for a player that isn't worth the price, I'm sure your dad would've said the same thing about the cars he bid on.
He never said he was against paying players, instead he's actually said the opposite.
