I am stealing this post from CottonWasKing on the Tiger Rant because it explains the dynamics of BK's opinion. Its not that we won't pay players, we won't pay them more than they are worth because of the precedent it might set:

Ok so let’s say we pay Damonic Williams 1.5 for average defensive line play for one season.

That’s more than either of our Offensive Coordinators make btw but let’s say we do it.

We can afford an extra 1.5 this year no problem.

But what happens next year? Williams is gone but Whit Weeks is still here. All of those freshman DBs are still here. Nuss is still here. That whole incoming 2025 recruiting class is here.

Do you honestly think they won’t be in BK’s office saying “well you paid him that and I’m better than him so where’s my money?”

What do you do when half your starters walk into the portal because you can’t afford to pay them what you paid a very average defensive tackle?

Be careful of the precedents you set.

What if they say the following though:

“Oklahoma thought he was worth 1.5 and I am better than him. Where’s my money? Should I go there?”

It’s not like there is some dirty secret that only this forum knows about. All the players know what each other is getting even at other schools.

And about the locker room cancer that has been mentioned before overpaying; what about after some games where the d dense gets slashed up? You think the players would care about a guy that gets overpaid or losing?

If Harold Perkins gets tired of being trucked by game six, you think he’s going to say, “oh well, at least we didn’t over pay for d Williams”.

Precedents, like overpaying your DC? BK's desperation to fix y'alls defense set this in motion. If I were an LSU fan I'd be curious as to why it's acceptable to overpay coaches, but not players.
