Oklahoma has a fantastic history. They've won their conference 50 times, and that's while spending most of their history in the same conference as Nebraska, who's won their conference 49 times. In comparison, Alabama has won 36 conference championships.

OU also played in a conference with most of the teams being among the teams that lose most often (Kansas, Kansas St, Iowa State, Oklahoma State), while Alabama plays in a conference that has 6 of the top 13 teams in
all time wins (Bama, Tenn, UGA, AU, UF. LSU)

Not trying to diminish OU, but the Big 8 was overall not a tough conference. I think Alabama had over 100 more games against top 20 teams than OU, maybe more.

The Big 8 was better in overall quality than the Big 12…. Or at the very least OU did a better job of scheduling quality OOC opponents during their Big 8 days.

Here’s how many Top 25 opponents each team played between 1936-1994, when the Big 8 and SWC were mostly still around:

185- Texas
182- Alabama, LSU
175- Florida
169- Tennessee
168- Texas A&M
164- Auburn, Oklahoma
157- Georgia

I think the old SWC and Big 8 were not too far off from the strength of the old SEC, pre 1990s. Texas and Oklahoma also played each other every season OOC so it boosted their SOS.

It’s really since the 1990s that the SEC became enormously more difficult compared to the other leagues.
