Are you sure it wasn't a Chuck Will's Widow?
They sound very similar and most folks don't know the difference.

That's fascinating! I think I have a Chuck-will's widow, not a whippoorwill. I'll have to do some recordings and comparisons and maybe try to put eyes on the bird I'm hearing. It's mostly active with the singing at night, so it'll be tough.

We have both in our area but their song is pretty distinctive when you can compare them within seconds of one another. They will answere one another also...so even they apparently have difficulty distinguishing the difference. They both will answer a pretty bad imitation of either one of them also so I don't know that judging their hearing is very scientific. That being said most people call all of 'em whipporwills....
