Anyone else surprised Spurrier is returning to Columbia?

I thought for sure he would be done (retire) after this season. I guess he still could call it quits, but since there is no buzz about it, I'm assuming he will return. Not that USCe is a dumphole or anyting, I just can't imagine that he forsees any hope of vaulting over UF or UGA anytime soon.

I think another 7-5 season will be enough to walk away. Once Florida and Georgia lose Tebow and Stafford it might open the door for a USC or Tenn to get back in the mix.

We could win 5 straight SEC championships and unlikely vault either of those 2. Its not about dominating the SEC with an iron fist like he used to. Thatll be hard for anyone to do anymore, especially at SC. He is here to do things that no coach at SC has ever done before. Including winning at least just 1 SEC Championship which could hopefully be built on by his predcessor.

SOS is stubborn, so I am only slightly surprised. What where the terms in regards to him getting an Augusta membership? That's only reason I can see him sticking around. He ain't ever winning the SEC. Word is Jerri has made no secret she wants to get the hell out of Columbia and head home so she can cheer for the Gators again.

Well what do you expect her to say? This job is hopeless and I want to get the hell out of this dump of a town? She is a good soldier.

Why would he quit? He's in about a no-pressure situation as there could ever be in college football. A great, supportive fanbase that always packs 80K into the stadium for a program that traditionally has only won 6 bowl games EVER.
Not that I think the program is going to go anywhere as long as he's there, but he has every incentive to not leave on his own.
All he has to do is average 7/8 wins/year and a bowl win every 3rd year and he's still easily goign to be the most successfull headcoach Carolina's had in a generation or two.

Sounds like you don't think his heart is in it. Which I would agree with. He is a good coach, but he just doesn't seem the same as he was when he was helping send LSU football to the 9th layer of hell.

To Spurrier, coaching at South Carolina is quasi-retirement already. South Carolina and Augusta, Georgia, is like an old folks' home where he golfs, and on the weekends he still volunteers some of his time coaching an at-risk football program that needs a father figure (just one not quite as old as Lou Holtz).

Yes, but it must be awfully uncomfortable constantly living in the shadow of Paul Dietzel's 1969 ACC championship.

I guarantee Spurrier's SC tenure outlast Miles' LSU tenure. And that is sad considering he already has a Championship under his belt.

Apparently SOS loves a challenge and will stick it out as long as he's able. This will be his last coaching job ever, so it might be tough to walk away just yet. However, as far as cities go, Columbia, SC beats Gainesville, FL by a mile.
