a question we have all asked. He was simply awful in the tourney. Off the top of my head I can't recall him winning a single game in the tourney. For Aggies this is, of course, unrealistic expectations. For programs that like to win, it's not.
I wish him well though he's a good guy.
At the end of the day it's just basketball. I know some care about it but outside the tourney I don't watch a single game all year.
....don't get me started on the baseball program, however.

quote:wanting more than 3 tournament appearances and zero wins in the tournament over 6 years is not an unrealistic expectation for a power conference program that had been to the dance 16 of the previous 17 years before he got there
He couldn’t handle the unrealistic expectations in Austin
Then again, a&m gave their basketball coach an extension for going once over 4 years and getting blasted by a 10 seed in the first round
Poor aggies

I don't think I'd call "win a tournament game" unrealistic. He had 5 seasons to do it and failed.
Did Texas boosters interfere with the basketball program?

I'm way more plugged in to football, but according to some of my buddies who are heavy into hoops it was the type of players he was expected to recruit at Texas. Lots of future NBA players, but they didn't really fit the scrappy type of ball he coached elsewhere. I don't know really, I was convinced he was going to bring a couple championships to Texas or at least some deep runs at it.

Shaka Smart got to Austin and decided to start not doing literally every single thing that made him successful at VCU and ran a completely different system.

This was 100% true, he suddenly had access to players like Jarrett Allen and Mo Bamba and decided to change his system away from the havoc style play that fit hits guard/perimeter oriented play at VCU

I'm likely going to eat shite and watch Marquette come back from 13 down at the half to win it as a 2 vs. an 11.
But, basically... this.

Turns out Shaka's a choke artist at Marquette too.

Happens all the time to mid major coaches. They figure out a style that maximizes limited talent and then shift away from it at big schools with access to elite players. A major reason Nate Oats has been so successful is staying pure to his system.

Bama does have a very good coach….I’d trade yall for him, but I’m guessing that’s a “No”! Good luck.
