Unless Gates changes some things in his philosophy I don't see any long term success unfortunatley. The defense played by this team both years has been bad, real bad. It was shored up last year because Hodge set a school record in steals. Defense on the perimeter is pathetic. This year the block rate is high but it does not matter. Teams shots are too often not even contested and the 3 point % vs Mizzou is telling. Add to that the lack ANY Gates lead teams being even decent in rebonding compiles the issue. Last year worked as a talented and veteran ball club. Have yet to see much in player development either.

Spot on. Gates coaching style is to defense what Cuonzo coaching style was to offense ...

I still have a sliver of hope he can grow out of this season but it would take a wholesale coaching paradigm shift that I don't think he's capable of.

I would agree. Defense and rebounding matter, a lot. $21million buyout is a lot but I wouldn't be upset if the new AD made it happen.

I dont see how a coach of a team this bad could ever be expected to compete at the highest levels.

Not to mention that loss to princeton last year was just unacceptable in hindsight.
