It's impossible to be a good mayor of Birmingham. There literally is nothing inside the city limits that inspires. Maybe a few downtown areas near the Civic Center and possibly some areas near Avondale are OK, but otherwise the city is just being drained by a huge number of low life government dependent people.

He tweeted how Birmingham was an accessible city, I tweeted back and took a picture of the sidewalk next to regions park where it was a gravel spot and my daughter’s chair could barely make it over it. It was just ignored. The dude ignores the fact they have an insane homicide rate constantly. He’s a shite mayor. Bottom line.

Correct answer. As a whole, Birmingham (and Montgomery) are as good right now as they’re ever going to be. There’s no stopping the decline. There will be islands of nice, relatively safe areas but the chance to arrest the decline and restore them to past glory has passed.

In both cases, the suburbs have developed to the point that they’re largely self supporting now and thus people who can afford to flee do so, leaving a very high percentage of the population unwilling or unable to contribute to society. It’s what happens when you let crime run rampant and the public school system crater.

A mayor can only do so much. Can't dictate welfare policy or drug policy for instance.

It was considered one of the best southern cities until the 1960s. What destroyed it was policy. Policy can be changed.
