Looking at the last 7 seasons and comparing Torvik ratings in home games compared to the ratings in Road/Neutral games. This is how the Top 25 programs have faired in order of their home court advantage:

1. Michigan State- .0637
2. Auburn- .0580
3. Creighton- .0574
4. San Diego St- .0537
5. Alabama- .0507
6. St Mary’s- .0486
7. Ohio St- .0447
8. Purdue- .0445
9. Tennessee- .0397
10. Arizona- .0327

AVG Home Court advantage for these 25 teams is .0256

Other notables:

17. Kansas- .0123
18. Florida- .0090
19. Texas- .0087
21. Gonzaga- .0030
23. North Carolina: -.0074
24. Kentucky: -.0090
25. Duke: -.0170

UNC, Kentucky, and Duke compute to have a home court DISADVANTAGE… playing better on the road and in neutral sights compared to at home.

Not surprised to see Auburn at the top of the SEC.

I do think this sort of makes the financial decision even harder for Bama to build a new arena. They obviously have a home court advantage already.

It’s very surprising if you’ve watched college basketball for more than 5 years.

OP gives 7 years of data and this is your response?

Yes. Why didn’t he give 10 years of data? 20? It’s because Auburn has been only been good in basketball for 6. Before that they were miserable. So he picked 7.

It’s like Vanderbilt having a winning football record 5 years in a row and then crowing about it nonstop.

Not bad for a WW2 bunker.

Not sure about 10 but 20 would be pretty fricking stupid since our arena didn't exist.

Auburn didn’t play basketball before you built that arena? Weird!

What part of home court do you not understand? The OP specifically said that the data shows no need to replace Coleman.

I'd guess the main thing behind those numbers for Alabama is simply that while Oats/Alabama have shown they can win in games they don't get good 3pt shooting, they have been unbeatable in games they do.

All teams tend to shoot 3s a lot better at home.

It almost makes the argument to replace Coleman stronger and add a much more raucous arena dynamic to what's already working.

watching these two "football" schools rise & how much buzz they generate now with basketball is awesome.. really cool time be a fan.. Coach Pearl & Coach Oats are worth every penny they earn to their respective schools.

Well that eliminates 99.9% of barn fans.

there is very clearly another way to interpret this data and that is that it's not necessarily a good thing to have that severe of a home court advantage (or difference in performance at home).

this doesnt mean you have the best home court, it means that you aren't any good on the road or neutral. it is definitely NOT a coincidence that duke, kentucky, unc, and kansas are towards the bottom of this top 25, not the top. and it's not because they don't have awesome home courts.

There is definitely some truth to this, however, your home court should bring some advantage or you’re not doing it right.

i don't disagree!

i don't really think it's a bad thing to be at the top of the list, either. it means you do well in home games, which beats the shite out of losing at home!

Yeah, that was my thinking as well. The barn and Bama both tend to shite the bed on the road.
