Looks like they have at least one kid. Makes sense to me for the wife and kid(s) to stay behind at least till the school year is over.

She's also a college professor. Perhaps she feels bad about jumping ship in the middle of the semester.

And this is very , very likely the answer. They have two daughters,
one graduates from high school this year and will play
softball for the Washington Huskies and the other younger in school.
