No, Saban didn't just wake up and decide it was time. Saban knew it was time when his team lost an overtime semifinal game and the immediate response by most of his team was, "yeah but, you gonna have to pay me more money".

You honestly believe Nick Saban made such a decision that will affect so many other people so spontaneously?
Hint: He didnt.
