2023 was the first and only season of the CFP era that a 3-loss team did not make the top 12.

It will play out a bit differently with automatic bids, but if history is any indication, 3 losses is rarely a disqualifier from being in the top 12.

3-loss Teams in Top 12

2014: 4
2015: 1
2016: 5
2017: 1
2018: 4
2019: 2
2020: 2 (Covid Year)
2021: 1
2022: 2
2023: 0

You do realize a Power 4 team who is NOT a conference champion must be in the Top 11 not Top 12. That's because the G5 team that must make the CFP will likely NOT be in the top 12.

So, SEC teams wanting to make the CFP in 2024 are aiming first to be SEC Champions and second to be Top 11.

It's pretty damning that our 8-3 team would've still made it in 2020.

If nothing else the 12-team playoff will make conference championship game weekend even way more interesting than it already is.
