Yeah..he sure coached a hell of a game against his biggest opponent Michigan this year!

His "heisman" candidate looked ready to play behind that well coached offensive line!

While that defense stopped the run all night forcing the Wolverines to make tough throws!

How well does he recruit?

This will be a narrative people will recite, but in fairness he was at Washington. That would be a hard place for anybody to recruit.

That said, I would not expect him to be a great recruiter along the lines of Saban. Who is besides Kirby Smart?
Thing is, he took a lower rated roster and took them to the National Championship game.

He’s a risky hire. But a good hire nonetheless.

He’ll be gone in 5 years.

It’s apples to oranges. If Penix isn’t on that team with those awesome WRs and the team wasn’t young.

It sounds exactly like LSU (Daniels and WR's) yet Deboer took Washington to a National Championship and LSU fans think Kelly is better than sliced bread.

Don't get me wrong. I think Kelly is good. But the amount of flip flopping LSU fans are doing is amazing.

I don’t really think anyone knows what to think of this hire.

If Oregon had beaten them in the rematch, and Washington had not gone to the playoffs - would this man be the coach?

Probably not.

Does that mean he won’t be a great coach?

No.

Really, all this is conjecture and no bama fan is thrilled with this hire.

There’s a tad difference between the SEC and the west coast conference that just disbanded. Just sayin.

That said, I hear your point.

“Flip flopping” requires you to give a shite about something, which I don’t think majority of us LSU fans do about this hire.

Try again…

No doubt that Saban had at least a small input into the selection process. We all know he had to replace assistant coaches that got hired away every year. So this guy is a good coach. Bama is loaded with talented players, and a big part of recruiting is winning. Going to the twelve team playoffs this year. He’ll do fine

People are wondering about his recruiting. Recruiting has changed. Kids follow the money for the most part now, not slick talking. And Bama will get him talent.....Good coaching is more important these days. That is where Deboer excels and Saban was slipping.

You don't care yet you are in this thread arguing about it? Odd.

Nice hire for someone losing his offensive coordinator that brought him to the dance.

Kirk Herbstreit gave rave reviews about Haskins when Auburn hired him.

Riveting info here, guys. If coaches lose games instead of winning they won’t get better jobs.

Mind blown

SEC plus FSU =/= Pac12

In all honesty, though, it's a very similar hire

See original TRob topic for reaction to a real homerun hire for comparison.

It’s an interesting hire… could be good, could be bad, was always going to be a big downgrade. You can’t talk about this hire without talking about Saban’s retirement.

And unless DeBoer wins a natty, it’ll be true of the next guy… and the next guy… until someone does.

DeBoer’s greatest potential upside is his age. The downside is you have no idea what his teams look like without Grubb/Penix. If Washington loses to Oregon this year, DeBoer isn’t even a candidate.
