Exactly. There is other stuff going on and most people don’t want to be glued to a TV.
But to OPs question, NYE is on a Sunday. That’s the NFLs day.

Rose Bowl insists on always being on New Year’s Day, so when it is one of the playoff games then the playoff games are on NYD.
On the other years it is on NYE or Dec. 30th depending on what day they fall on.

They need to reschedule the 12 te to where the whole season ends January 1st.

All bowl games that matter used to be played on January 1.
At first it was the Rose, Cotton, Sugar, and Orange. College football season ended when the Rose Bowl clock struck 0.
There’s not much good left in college football but putting the big games back on Jan 1 is one of the few.
