I like Klatt but I can’t take any list seriously that puts a team from before 2008 above a team from after 2017
01, 04 and 05 would lose easily to 18, 19, 20, 21 or 22. Especially if we’re playing with today’s ruleset

quote:It was hard to see in the moment but there was a definite change in the game. Bama and LSU in 2011 were two of the last great teams from the prior era. As great as those teams were, I don’t see much use in comparing them to LSU/Bama in 2019.

Opposite thought could be used to wonder if the early 2000’s teams would exert dominance in the running game and shorten the game by today’s rules. Early 2000 run offenses vs today’s lighter weight (relatively speaking) defenses would create a weekly mismatch that countered the pass-first offenses of today.
Running the ball with today’s rules shortens the game and makes the passing game perform under narrower room for errors. Especially with fewer series opportunities.
I could imagine many of the games being similar to Bama-Texas in the NC. Bama was able to run effectively, but Texas gave them a fight with its passing game (Texas then being constructed similar to today’s teams) even with their backup QB.
