Not just the opponent.
He plays the clock.

And it is the truth... finishing a half with a field goal or touchdown is the goal.
Saving clock too early gives the opponent a chance for points and momentum.
Why is this an argument at this point?

I agree.
Wide-open offense is a necessary risk in the first half in order to build a comfortable lead.
I don't believe in ultra-conservative offense in the 2nd half but if you can get first downs and chew up clock, additional scoring is less of a priority.
This works with a strong defense.
But if you don't have a strong defense, like for instance LSU, you best score as often as possible.
