And always will be at best.
You're looking for misery, if you expect this program to make your weekends happy.

It has its ups and downs. More downs than ups.

Yep. We keep drifting down the list of all time programs. What makes it worse is that our main rivals are in all time streaks.

Auburn won a national championship in 2010 and played for another in 2013. Auburn can get the players and they have enough money to get coaches and facilities. The problem is that we keep hiring sucky mediocre coaches. And I don’t know if that applies to Hugh yet. Probably the best coach we’ve had this century was Tommy Tuberville, and that’s still very mediocre.

We play coaching carousel every few years instead of going after big names to begin with. Then end up spending millions to buy them out when they suck! Seems like they can't get out of their own way at times.

I’d take Gus over Tommy.
Tommy was a fraud and still is.
Excellent bullshitter though.

I’d beg to differ. The 2004 team was probably the best Auburn football team all around. And 6 straight against Alabama, even while they were down, was fun.

That 2004 defense was just punch you in the mouth ugly. They played angry!

Doesn’t matter about one season.
Gus still kicks arse at times after leaving Auburn
Tommy was a complete joke and a flop after leaving

And those wins against Florida were awesome classics. I’ll always love Tubs for what Auburn accomplished in the 2000s

We also have fans immediately calling for a current head coach to be fired after tonight. What big name coach really wants to come here when the GOBs and fan base act like this?

Every coach Auburn has hired except for Harsin has kicked arse at one point

Auburn has never had a big name coach. And there’s a reason for it. Or at least there has been a reason for it. It’s not like they don’t go after them, big-name coaches, go to big-name programs that let them coach.
People just will not accept that

We are who we thought we were.
But, yeah, OP is right. There is just something very strange with CFB. Theoretically there is no reason a school like AU or TAMU shouldn't be able to equal top programs, but they just can't. It doesn't matter how much money is spent or who they hire. There is just an "aura" that they can't win and it somehow sticks. You don't see this in the NFL (I guess because talent is equal there).
Either way, I don't think Freeze will be able to get it done. I see him being 8-4 most years. That is not bad, but it's not good enough to have fired Gus for. The fact is there is no "science" to coaching hires, so I don't really blame the AD's. It's a craps shoot. LSU got lucky rolling the dice on Saban and it worked. Then Bama threw a brink's truck at him and have profited since.
UGA found the right coach and are going to win their 3rd natty this season setting an NCAA record. I doubt they lose the SEC in the next decade.
But we're not alone. UT and Florida are about in the same boat as us - they just can't win consistently either. No matter who they hire or what kind of money they spend, they have been relegated to 7-5 hell just like us.

And those people are idiots, that do not represent the majority of the fan base

Let’s be honest. Even though they’re wrong, no fanbase is going to have a loss like that and not have some fans wanting the coach fired. That’s not exclusive to Auburn.
