I don't see how we beat NC without him. It's been a great season though.

I do, reserve players step up like Mo D did in the last 5 minutes of the 2nd round game.

I still and probably never will understand why Oats won't play some type of zone! GC was basically isolating ever play and going 1 on 1. We really struggled for awhile stopping them from getting shots in the paint or layups. I'm not saying play zone for 10 minutes or longer. Just throw a zone at them every so often off of a dead ball or timeout.

One more:

Davison has played in 28 of Maine’s 29 games this season. The second-year point guard is averaging 21.8 points, five rebounds, 8.8 assists, and 1.4 steals per game.

One of the officials from last night made the cut (Kipp Kissinger). Not sure which one he was though.

It runs contrary to his entire philosophy at a fundamental level and he’s not the most flexible guy in the world

It's very likely that it's a trick. Because saying he can't play makes the process of preparing the offense and defense easier for UNC.

Really good point. As soon as it was labeled a head injury and Wrightsell looked dizzy or slow walking to the locker room, there was almost no chance he was playing this weekend. I just assumed Nate got ahead of himself in the presser due to wishful thinking, but it could have been strategic.

Edit: I’d be shocked if there was a neurologist that would be willing to risk his/her reputation (or even medical license) by clearing Wrightsell to play this quickly after a 2nd head injury (and possibly his 3rd as we know he had a setback trying to get back from the original concussion…which may have just pointed to how bad the first one was).

My guess would be because its harder to rebound out of zone.

It’s also giving teams open 3s which is against everything he stands for

Only open if the defense is slacking.

Its good to force 3s, stay out of foul trouble and rest a little on defense.

Kipp Kissinger

He’s apparently on record for being part of NCAAT crews that allow things to get too physical and too obviously lopsided towards one team.

quote:

When North Carolina’s Brady Manek fired an elbow into the face of Baylor’s Jeremy Sochan with 10:08 left in an NCAA Tournament second-round game Sunday, it sent the officiating crew working the game to the replay monitor with a big decision to make. Eject a key player from an elimination game, or assign a lesser penalty and play on? Ultimately, the crew of Donnie Eppley, Kipp Kissinger and Brent Hampton made the right call: It was a flagrant 2 foul and Manek had to go. The strange part is everything that happened thereafter. The game dissolved into a street fight, with Baylor implementing an extremely physical full-court press that reduced a 25-point deficit to a manageable number in shockingly rapid time. Rather than rein in the contact, the refs became bystanders. The Bears bumped and shoved and slapped, and the whistles did not blow—well, at least not against the aggressor that was playing desperately to get back into the game. The whistles blew many times against North Carolina. Aside from a double foul assessed to both teams, the next seven calls were all fouls on the Tar Heels. That’s not to mention the no-calls that went against Carolina while being waylaid. The most egregious: guard Caleb Love being body-blocked at midcourt, with the result being a turnover and Baylor dunk. There also was a blatantly missed out-of-bounds call late in the game that was ruled Baylor ball and had to be overturned on review. The reigning national champion Bears got the game into overtime, a mind-boggling comeback in 10 minutes of game time, but they had help. North Carolina regrouped and won in OT, which spared the officials even more criticism than what was being heaped upon them via social media as the hackfest unfolded.

Those are good points and probably reasons Oats only uses man to man defense.

I'd guess the main reason is pretty simple: pace of play.

The higher pressure man-to-man, even when it's not stifling the other team still speeds most teams up.

Even in games where we've played really porous defenses resulting in deficits midway through the 2nd half, I'd bet Oats thinks the man-to-man having also sped the entire tempo of the game up has a lot to do with us having so many big runs down the stretch too.

Another reason is probably just practice time. He's far from the only coach who believes it's better to concentrate and improve on one defense instead of different ones.

I did not know Rears had gotten so close to Reggie's numbers. If he gets his average he should pass him. If we win he certainly will be the new King.

The refs were unusually bad, wonder how much they had bet on the game ....
