Byrne being a career administrator - with some legacy background in athletics due to his father - rather than a former coach or favorite son has a lot of advantages. Knowing when it is time to proactively roll back the Brinks truck is one of them.
It’s going to happen. This couldn’t work out any better than for KY to replace their coach right after Oats signs a huge contract extension with significant buyout. Thanks, UL and Mich, and thank YOU Greg Byrne!!!

Have a feeling Oats is about to get a phone call!

30mm buyout of Cal and rumored 18mm of Oats, 48mm is a lot to pay before even considering the salary it would take. Just hope Oats already signed

Thank God Oats has already signed that extension. I would fire Cal after this if I was UK
Posted on 3/21/24 at 8:30 pm to PBD4BAMA
Well the SEC looks really really really bad

Signing doesn't keep him, just makes it more difficult for kentucky to get him

Yeah I hope we make a run, but the SEC has looked like complete dog water today

Honestly, I had 2 of the 3 losing, but kentucky is shocking!

They ain’t paying over $20M to fire Cal and $18M to hire Oats.

I did as well, but I wouldn’t say this is shocking. I had them winning the championship as a 2 seed in my family bracket 2 years ago, so I learned my lesson once and for all about how bad of a coach Cal is. I didn’t pick Oakland to win, but it’s not all that shocking (especially to KY fans on tRant).

Not sure who they will get, but just imagine if it was Wade. Oats vs a KY Wade would be nuts, not to mention every time he would play LSU.
Hope their next coach is an underachiever or past his prime like Cal.

I started to feel really anxious. I'm really worried. Anything can happen in a tournament.

Byrne just made Oats one of the highest paid coaches in the profession, he's not going anywhere this year. I really think Sparty when Izzo hangs it up is our biggest threat.

As for those ready for Kentucky to fire John Calipari, his contract calls for him to be owed 75-percent of the value remaining on his deal. That's more than $33 million right now.
They are stuck with him

Caligari just said he knew the zone would be tough....
Really wish Nate would mix in a couple of zone defenses next season because the teams that beat us like a drum all did so because it was so easy to take us when we won't change what we do defensively

This one’s going to get record downvotes, but I couldn’t pick us tomorrow. Several SEC teams were overseeded. In order
1) USC…metrics say they’re a 10-11 seed. Got run by most good teams, especially away from home.
2) A&M - they should be an 11 or in NIT. Extremely inconsistent and have to be hot or significantly more athletic to win (lost twice to Arkansas, think they lost to Vandy and had 14 losses). They have a decent matchup against Neb, but were materially overseeded.
3) MSU - metrics said 8ish but a lot of their metrics were tied to close home wins. If you’re athletic enough to switch on Hubbard and physical enough to guard Tolu, their offense grinds to a halt.
4) Brace yourself: Alabama - talent, quad 1 record, and recent trends point to not playing like a 4 seed. Metrics are a bit inflated due to beating bad teams, badly. If we were peak form, we’re a 3-4 seed. But right now we’re playing like a limited 7-8 seed. I give us 50% chance tomorrow, and picked Charleston due to being an emotional hedge, having the underdog chip on their shoulder, and due to crowd being 95% for Charleston (hoping AU loses to Yale as the barners won’t want to watch us play/win after that…similar to last year in Birmingham when they hit the exits before our game).
5) Kentucky - they weren’t really overseeded based on talent or record, but Cal is a bad coach.
UT and UF were accurately seeded in my book. Unfortunately, AU was probably underseeded a smidge but I’m hoping UCONN handles that. Downvote away…but I can’t make my picks based on heart.
P.S. Oats and staff did a great job getting this team to overachieve on the whole. Wish we were peaking and hoping for a miracle run to the final four, which I would probably try to attend if I could find flights.
